Incubator 2010

Beyond the instrument metaphor: new paradigms for interactive media

incubator 2010

As part of the Incubator series of workshops, initiated five years ago by the Center for Research in Computing and the Arts at UCSD, the School of Arts, Media and Engineering is hosting the 2010 Incubator Workshop during the weekend of Feb. 19-21 at Arizona State University. The workshop's theme is: Beyond the instrument metaphor: new paradigms for interactive media.

This workshop will bring together leading practitioners in music technology, human-computer interaction, multimedia arts, and cognitive science in order to investigate and prototype new directions related to interactivity and interface design for time-based media. Examples of these directions include distributed interaction, collective/social embodiment, rapid prototyping technologies, and form/aesthetics from an experience-centered perspective. The aim of this workshop is to explore these topics by actively collaborating, brainstorming, and even building new interface technologies, models and processes. It is a highly desired outcome that new collaborations and working relationships will initiate out of this workshop and continue to bear fruit for years to come.

The workshop begins on Friday evening, Feb. 19, with a short welcoming event involving interactive systems developed at the Herberger Institute and the School of Arts, Media and Engineering.

On Saturday morning, Feb. 20, five special invitees: Jonah Brucker-Cohen, Mark Danks, Marc Leman, Bill Verplank, and David Wessel will, in collaboration with members of the organizing committee, each present a theme related to the main vision of the workshop.

On Saturday afternoon, Feb. 20, and Sunday morning, Feb. 21, attendees will form small interdisciplinary teams and prototype a new interface technology, model or process that expresses or elaborates on one of the themes. For these purposes we will have two low-cost motion capture systems, a pressure-sensitive floor, equipment for rapid prototyping, a fabrication workshop, portable video and sound recording and editing equipment, web tools and of course meeting rooms and open space labs.

On Sunday afternoon, Feb. 21, teams will share their results in ad-hoc panel sessions involving all attendees. The workshop will end Sunday, Feb. 21 at 6 p.m. A closing dinner will follow.
