AME Concentration Areas: Fusing Discipline-Specific Training with Interdisciplinary Media Training

The purpose of the Arts, Media and Engineering (AME) concentrations is to provide an experience that combines solid discipline-specific knowledge with interdisciplinary education and research in experiential media. Students are invited to participate in the development of novel experiential media systems through collaborative interdisciplinary teams. Concentrations are available in the following degree paths:

There are three possible paths for participating in the AME concentrations:

1. Course based path: Students may choose to participate in the concentration by taking AME classes that augment their home department program. There is a lot of flexibility in the courses that are taken in this path, and courses are chosen primarily with the faculty advisor from the home unit. Students in this path do not receive funding from AME. Applicants choosing to pursue this path should prepare their applications with a their home unit audience in mind, as admission to this path will be primarily dependent on a positive review by the home unit. An AME faculty member should serve on the committee of students in this path. Students are welcome but not required to connect their culminating project (thesis/dissertation/exhibition) to AME research. AME research hours may be supervised by Media Arts and Sciences Graduate Faculty from the student's home unit.

2. Courses and informal research: Students may choose to participate in the concentration by taking AME classes that augment their home department program of study and volunteering in an AME research module. (Please see current AME modules here). Though students in this path do not receive AME funding, they have the opportunity to work within an AME research area. Students who would like to become competitive candidates for AME funding in the future may choose this path. Additionally, students who would like the opportunity to participate in an AME research module while retaining a high degree of flexibility in the direction of their program of study may also choose this path. Applicants choosing to pursue this path should prepare their applications with their home unit audience in mind, as admission to this path will be primarily dependent on a positive review by the home unit. However it is in the student's best interest to have a faculty mentor in AME available to co-advise her/him and facilitate the research s/he wants to pursue. An AME faculty member should serve on the committee of students in this path. Students are welcome but not required to connect their culminating project (thesis/dissertation/exhibition) to AME research. AME research hours may be supervised by Media Arts and Sciences Graduate Faculty from the student's home unit.

3. Courses and formal research at AME: Students may choose to participate in the concentration and work as an AME-funded student. AME funding is available on a limited and competitive basis. Applicants wishing to be considered for this path should prepare applications that meet both the home unit and AME requirements, indicate the research module of interest to them in their statement of purpose, and identify a possible AME mentor ahead of submitting their applications. Successful applicants will need a positive review from both the home unit and AME admissions committees. Students in this path will work with their AME co-advisor to identify courses that best augment their research activities, and their culminating project (thesis/dissertation/exhibition) need to be connected to their AME research module. AME research hours should be supervised by the student's AME advisor.
