Graduate Education

Yu-Ru Lin,
Ph.D. Computer Science

I chose AME because I’m interested in interdisciplinary study and in Professor Sundaram’s research. I’ve been participating in a research collaboration with NEC Labs America. I gained abundant research experience by taking courses that consolidate our theoretical backgrounds in arts, media and engineering, and by working with other researchers to deal with research problems in practice.

There are 15 degree paths for students interested in graduate education at AME, including doctoral and master’s degrees with digital-media concentrations in 10 disciplines and a Ph.D. in Media Arts and Sciences.

Combining graduate training in a specific discipline with interdisciplinary training in media
AME and the collaborating departments and schools offer formalized digital media concentrations in the graduate degrees of disciplines listed below.

Degree requirements vary by department, but all students take courses related to their research specialization within their home department and transdisciplinary courses offered through AME. All programs include substantial credit hours devoted to interdisciplinary research and thesis work within the AME research network. This common educational structure across 10 disciplines provides students with collaborative, strongly committed research teams with diverse knowledge and skills.

Transdisciplinary graduate education in media arts and sciences
AME offers a: Ph.D. in Media Arts and Sciences (MAS)

Students with undergraduate training in any related art, science, engineering or humanities field are welcome to apply for admission to this degree. Applicants should have a track record that demonstrates interest, and potential in transdisciplinary media training.

Sarah Hatton, M.F.A. Digital Technology

AME has given me the opportunity to publish my research in international conferences, work locally in schools and to exhibit art in major venues. I am currently working on various language-learning and storytelling projects. I make visual media for SMALLab, but also I’ve learned a great deal about sound and software design.
